1. Sometimes, SH*T Happens!

There are some PYOG customers who have had the WORST luck when painting their own guitar. Recently, one PYOG customer emailed me with pix of his latest guitar.

Apparently, everything was going along fine... until he applied the clear. %$#*&^%@@#!!!!!

The first thing a "do-it-yourselfer" thinks when something like this happens is, "Man - I really messed this up!" The truth is, the MANUFACTURER messed up.

In this case, they put the wrong paint in the can. This customer had no problems when he applied a different can of clear on the body.

This isn't an isolated case; it's happened to a few other customers as well - but not many. In this case, the customer used Rust-O-Leum, but it's happened to people who've used Krylon as well.

When sh*t like this happens, all you can do is remove the paint and start again. There's no way to fix it. However, to avoid possibly buying more faulty paint, buy paint from another location.

If this happens to you, DO NOT let it kill your desire to want to paint your own guitar. Painting your own guitar is both fun and rewarding. But there are times when things are totally out of your control - as was the case for Scott.

2. SPRAYMAX - 2-Part Rapid Primer/Filler

PYOGFinding a really good product to use to help fill in the grain of your body's wood prior to paint is essential to producing a great finish.

A product I've used recently with great success is SPRAYMAX - 2-PART RAPID PRIMER FILLER. This is a catalyzed primer; you add a catalyst to the primer by way of a nozzle on the bottom of the can which releases the catalyst into the primer.

The beauty of this product is that once the primer hardens - which is what the catalyst helps it to do - and you've sanded it, you can use ANY type of paint over top of it... there won't be any compatibility issues.

Although this product is a little more expensive than a regular can of spray paint, when you consider what you get for the money, it really is worth using.

You can get it through Amazon.com. To learn more about, check it out here.

Another good product that would be worth using is Behlen's Water-Based Grain Filler. It's water-based, so clean up is pretty easy. This product is designed to brush on, so for me, that's probably the only drawback - I prefer spraying on my coats rather than brushing them on.
